How to verify Mounjaro authenticity

A step-by-step check of the carton and the KwikPen: what the GS1 DataMatrix encodes, which fields must match the print on the box, why Lilly’s official scan.lilly.com does not recognise a UK pack, and which signs mean “do not use”.

Short answer

There is no public database where a buyer can look up the serial number of a UK Mounjaro pack. Lilly’s official service, scan.lilly.com, checks serial numbers of packs obtained in the United States — it will not return a result for the UK version, and that is not a sign of a counterfeit. Pack verification under the European FMD stopped working in Great Britain on 1 January 2021 and was disapplied across the whole United Kingdom, Northern Ireland included, on 1 January 2025.

So the check that is actually available has four parts: read the GS1 DataMatrix with any scanner, match the GTIN, batch number, expiry date and serial against the text printed on the carton, compare the serial with the photo sent before dispatch, and inspect the KwikPen itself along with the cold chain. None of these gives a hundred per cent guarantee — the guarantee comes from where the batch came from, not from looking at the box.

What the check does and does not prove

MethodWhat it givesWhat it does not give
GS1 DataMatrix scanner on a phoneReads a structured string: (01) GTIN, (17) expiry date, (10) batch number, (21) serial numberDoes not check the serial against the manufacturer’s database — it only shows what the code encodes
scan.lilly.com (official Eli Lilly service)Checks whether a serial number is consistent with medicines made by Lilly and obtained in the United StatesDoes not cover packs from other markets, including the UK: no result is not evidence of a counterfeit
UK national verification databaseNot available: FMD ceased in Great Britain on 01/01/2021 and across the whole UK on 01/01/2025
Visual inspection of the carton and penCatches crude fakes: broken seals, blurred print, mismatched dates, cloudy solutionDoes not guarantee authenticity: a good counterfeit can look correct

This is why DOZA does not offer “check the code online” as proof: we show the serial number before dispatch and work with a single UK version from Eli Lilly and Company Limited, so the origin of the batch is known before the box reaches the client.

The check in 7 steps

Order matters: the first three steps happen before the carton is opened.

1
Step 1

Inspect the outer carton before opening it

Cardboard with no damp marks or re-gluing, side flaps intact, print sharp and evenly set. Genuine Eli Lilly packaging never carries translation stickers, handwritten marker notes or overprinted dates.

2
Step 2

Find the GS1 DataMatrix

It is a square two-dimensional code on the side of the carton, next to the printed serial number. A DataMatrix has no three large corner squares — that is what distinguishes it from a QR code.

3
Step 3

Scan the code with any DataMatrix reader

Any 2D code scanner app will do. The code should resolve into a structured string with GS1 application identifiers: (01) GTIN, (17) expiry date, (10) batch number, (21) serial number. If the code will not read at all, stop there.

4
Step 4

Match what you scanned against the print on the carton

The batch number, expiry date and serial from the code must match the printed text word for word. A mismatch in even one field means “do not use” — even if everything else looks flawless.

5
Step 5

Compare the serial with the photo sent before dispatch

On request DOZA sends a photo of the batch serial number before the parcel leaves. You compare it with the code on the carton you receive. It is not a substitute for a manufacturer database, but it fixes the number before shipping and makes a swap in transit obvious.

6
Step 6

Inspect the KwikPen itself

The pen label carries the Mounjaro name, the dose in mg and the same batch number. The solution in the window must be clear and colourless, with no particles, cloudiness or sediment. The cap is intact and unopened, the dose window is clean, the body free of cracks.

7
Step 7

Check the expiry date and the cold chain

The expiry date on the carton and on the pen must match and must not be close. The thermobox should arrive sealed, with a coolant that is still cold. Mounjaro is stored at 2–8 °C; a temperature excursion does not make the product a counterfeit, but it does make it unusable.

Signs that mean do not use the product

  • The pack has no serial number, or no scanner can read the DataMatrix.

  • The data in the code does not match the printed text: a different batch number or a different expiry date.

  • The seller refuses to show the serial number before payment, or sends the same photo to different buyers.

  • The price is far below market — genuine tirzepatide is never cheap given manufacturing cost and cold-chain logistics.

  • Tirzepatide is offered as tablets, a spray or sublingual drops. Eli Lilly makes no such forms: Mounjaro exists only as a subcutaneous injection.

  • Product sold loose, in unbranded vials or syringes, or repackaged from a bulk container.

  • The solution is cloudy, has sediment or a changed colour, or the pen arrived warm with no coolant.

If you suspect a counterfeit

Do not use the product

Do not inject “just to see”. Keep the carton, the pen and the packaging materials — they are needed for the review.

Photograph everything

The carton from every side, the DataMatrix, the printed serial, the pen label, the contents of the thermobox. Photos are the basis of any claim.

Report it to the manufacturer

Eli Lilly accepts reports of suspicious product. For the UK version through Eli Lilly and Company Limited contacts, for US packs through the Lilly Answers Center.

Write to DOZA

We pause the programme, review the batch and act under our returns terms. The procedure is set out in the public offer and the refund policy.

What DOZA does on its side

One version, not “whatever arrived”

DOZA works with the UK version of Mounjaro from Eli Lilly and Company Limited. One market means one pack appearance, one labelling format and predictable logistics.

Serial number before dispatch

On request we send a photo of the serial number before the parcel leaves. You compare it on delivery.

Cold chain at 2–8 °C

A thermobox with coolant the whole way. If the temperature range is breached, the product is replaced.

A specialist on hand

Before the first injection you can show the pack to a specialist and go through the check together. If contraindications are found, the programme does not start.

Not for a UK pack. Lilly’s official scan.lilly.com service checks serial numbers of packs obtained in the United States and returns nothing for the UK version. The European FMD verification system stopped operating in Great Britain on 1 January 2021 and was disapplied across the whole United Kingdom on 1 January 2025. The check that remains available is reading the GS1 DataMatrix with a scanner and matching the GTIN, batch, expiry and serial against the print on the carton, plus comparing the serial with the photo sent before dispatch.

Questions about your pack?

Send photos of the carton and the serial — a DOZA specialist will go through the check with you before the first injection.

This material is informational and does not replace a consultation with a doctor. A pack check is not a laboratory analysis and does not give a hundred per cent guarantee of authenticity. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription medicine from Eli Lilly, approved by the FDA (2022) and the EMA (2022); as of 2026 tirzepatide is not included in the State Register of Medicines of Ukraine.
